Bravo, bravo! This looks like a male version of me! I have been the walking compost since I have started school at SJSU. It didn't take me long to compromise my food ethics in order to afford calories, while I live on $3500 a semester from a loan. Our brain needs a lot of energy while studying! The woods, which Thoreau speaks of, appear as a rainbow to me. Each day I peek between buildings to glimpse the foothills and to see the light of the sun laying on the ridge of crevices, it seems so distant but within me at the same time. There once was a time when I had refused to let time guide me, but now I am in fast-forward to finish school with a clear view of the PCT and Belize and other ways of being in the world and living with plants that sustain us or the people that tell the story of their history. I would love to share a concise quote from Thoreau but I sold my books back that had my notes in them, yet, I feel the need to muster up my own, it will take time for it to make it through the smog in this urban school life. I am trying to not lose sight of myself in the woods while I am surrounded by cement which seeds and birds still thrive on in opportune times. I must push through the cement also and rise to feel the warmth of life all around us that only knows how to continue a cycle.
Kari--I keep a document with all the my favorite quotes gleaned from the books I read. Don't lose those quotes! First thing I do when I get money is buy me some health insurance and start eating more ethically (and expensively).

OurTake- I was definitely pleased with it. I don't think any of my past interviews have been at all negative. But there are plenty of vandwelling stories with negatives spins.
First of all, congratulations on the scholarship efforts- that's awesome you were able to raise that much money so quickly! Secondly, I would like to say that you're an inspiration to me. I would love to live that Thoreau-esque lifestyle. I'm currently in college right now, and I feel that I can totally identify with most everything you've said in this interview. The only thing I don't agree with is when you said that girls don't like frugality- not true!
Anon--I should clarify that I only raised $100. (We started off with $900.) But still, $100 is no small sum for just a couple weeks. Ha.. I knew someone was going to call me out on that "girls don't like frugality" line. The whole van/relationship topic is an interesting one, and it's more complex than I make it out to be in these interviews--maybe one of these days I'll conjure the courage to write an entry about it.
